IAEA General Conference Convenes In Vienna

The IAEA's five-day General Conference opens on Monday at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna to consider the Agency's programme and activities and approve its budget for the coming year.

The 58th General Conference is considered to be the foremost event in IAEA's annual calendar of meetings.

High-level governmental representatives from the IAEA's 161 Member States, including several at the ministerial level, are gathered to consider and discuss a range of topics on the peaceful development of nuclear technologies. During the gathering, about 3 000 participants from Member States, international organisations, as well as NGOs will deliberate on a range of topics on the peaceful development of nuclear technologies. These will include issues related to further strengthening the IAEA's programmes and activities in the areas of nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety; nuclear security; nuclear science, technology and applications; technical co-operation; improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Agency safeguards; application of the IAEA safeguards in the Middle East; and implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement between the Agency and North Korea.

At the opening session, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will deliver his official statement to the Conference, highlighting the major developments and achievements in the IAEA's work and programme for the previous year, and identify priorities in the year to come.

A number of events are also being organized in the margins of the General Conference. A special Scientific Forum on Radioactive Waste: Meeting the Challenge will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday. This Forum will examine the significance of an integrated approach to waste management, from its generation to disposal, available solutions and future developments in this specialized field.
