Letter: Using birth-control measure on Nevada wild horses is a bad idea

Bad idea, shooting up wild mares with PZP ["Nevada group tries to shrink mustang herd," News, April 25].

At best, its effects last two to four years, after which foals are subject to birth defects and being born out of season. That's why universities that have been issued grants to study PZP have surrendered them: It's bad stuff.

This "plan" is just another ploy by the BLM and land developers to eradicate wildlife. It is always irritating to hear somebody who built or bought a home in the middle of horse country carping about their lawn being chewed up. Hey, whiners, next time build your house at the end of the airport runway and whine to the city about the noise. It's sad that so many people put their comforts, needs and pleasures above those of beautiful creatures who were there first. But it ain't a new concept. Just ask the Native Americans and the buffalo.

Mankind never seems to learn anything from its own history. Sad indeed.
