Marine Le Pen has described her showdown against Emmanuel Macron like 'David against Goliath'

Ms Le Pen has taken her campaign to right-wing southern France, with a stop in Nice and a stint on a fishing boat, in a bid to show she is a woman of the people.

Speaking at a rally in Nice, she said: “We can win, throw them out. We are David against Goliath.”

The anti-EU candidate accused Mr Macron of being a puppet of the “oligarchs” who wanted to start a “lightning war on workers”.

She added: "The oligarchy has chosen the camp of the banker Macron and wants to use him to place its men, its networks, its politicians.”

Ms Le Pen, who has reportedly surged in the latest polls, also accused Mr Macron of being weak in the face of terrorism.

Speaking to the “martyred city” she added: "I will be the president who wages war on Islamist terrorists.

"I will show no weakness.

"This election is a referendum for or against France. I call on you to vote for France, not Mr Macron… who will lead to its destruction.”

Nice is reportedly at a key battleground for Ms Le Pen, as it is seen as the epicentre of a bitter divide between mainstream right-wing voters.

Resident of Nice’s Old Town and self-confessed right-wing voter, Claude Picaud, told the Telegraph: "I'm going to abstain [from voting in the second round]. Marine Le Pen's economic programme doesn't suit me at all, particularly leaving the euro.

“Macron is the continuation of Hollande, and I'm a right-winger.”

While David Zinet, who had voted Mr Fillon, said: "The first priority is security, and Marine will do more.

“The other is immigration, there are too many foreigners. I'm for controlling borders."

The latest Opinionway poll of French voter intentions has revealed Mr Macron has lost supporters.

While he is still expected to win, his score has slipped below the 60 per cent mark for the first time, at 59 per cent.

A Harris Interactive poll for RMC and Atlantico, published on Wednesday, revealed some 61 per cent of French voters think that Ms Le Pen is leading a successful second-round campaign, compared to 48 per cent for Mr Macron
