Girl Starter Launches Reality TV Show – Be Inspired to Become an Entrepreneur

Disclosure: Sponsored partnership with Staples. All opinions are 100% my own.

When I was 22 years old and living in NYC – fresh out of college – I dreamt of starting a children’s pajama company called Lily Whispers, with my mother. I’m smiling as I type this because it was something I had really wanted to do and was fully committed to diving into after. I was working in the fashion industry at the time, at Donna Karan, and just seeing this incredible fashion guru work every single day, creating an unstoppable brand… well, it was incredible. Donna Karan was a true inspiration for me and she really made me see this world of entrepreneurialism as the future direction I wanted to take.

I never went after that dream with my mom. I was scared about the time and financial investment. I wasn’t prepared to tackle both at that time in my life.

Looking back, I wish I had just gone after that dream. I wish I could’ve told my 22-year-old self to buckle up and go after the pie in the sky! I ended up waiting eight more years until I had the gusto to go full steam ahead as an entrepreneur into the world of social media and blogging.

I now know that being an entrepreneur was and is my calling.

I truly believe that it’s what I was put here to do with my life. I have such a deep passion for entrepreneurialism, especially female entrepreneurialism, because it’s empowering to be your own boss and create a tangible business out of something you came up with on your own.

Which brings me to the purpose of this post… I have two words for you: Girl Starter.

Girl Starter is a company that is committed to providing platforms which help to amplify girls who are on their way to becoming entrepreneurs and business leaders.

Pretty incredible, right? Well, it gets even better!

Girl Starter just launched a reality-competition TV show (the first episode aired on April 28th on Discovery Networks’ TLC and will continue to air every Friday at 7 pm ET) that documents eight girls, ages 18 to 24, as they compete for seed-round funding.

The series follows six steps of early-phase business building, from ideation through pitch, and features entertaining challenges, dynamic guest stars and a grand prize of $100,000 in funding and services. I also love that the brand’s website, GirlStarter.com, will complement the show with inspirational, actionable content to help propel girls and young women to build their own businesses.

This is exactly the kind of inspiration and motivation I wish I had 15+ years ago! Being an entrepreneur today, especially in this day and age, is a special thing. It’s not easy, and you need to be a hard worker and a hustler every single day to make your dream a reality, but it IS possible. It IS possible to achieve that pie in the sky if you want it enough.

As a long-time supporter of entrepreneurship initiatives, Staples has signed on as the show’s presenting sponsor.

I shop at Staples on a weekly basis, and I’ve always loved how they are truly a go-to destination for entrepreneurs and small business owners. From paper and technology to pens, pencils, notebooks, agendas, and even printing services for marketing materials… they’ve got all the tools and resources to help set professionals up for success!

“As the presenting sponsor of Girl Starter, Staples is proud to help empower these young women to pursue excellence and their dreams to be entrepreneurs. By following their experiences, we hope to inspire viewers everywhere to unleash their own potential,” said Frank Bifulco, Chief Marketing Officer, Staples. “At Staples, we’re united by our passion to help all businesses succeed, from small start-ups to larger mid-market and enterprise companies.”

I adore seeing a brand like Staples partner with Girl Starter because Staples helps start hundreds and hundreds of businesses (and keep them going) every single day. A very cool added bonus for me is that the CEO of Staples is Shira D. Goodman, an incredibly talented woman who also serves as a judge on the show!

I had the pleasure of meeting her at one of the episode tapings and she was beyond kind and so passionate about the show and Staples’ involvement in it. It was easy to see her commitment to the next generation of entrepreneurs!

I URGE you to watch Girl Starter on Friday nights on Discovery Networks’ TLC! You will become immersed in the show in no time! You will be inspired. You will be motivated. You will feel connected to the contestants out of the gate and how they succeed!

Thank you, Girl Starter, for creating a fabulous network online and offline that gets women moving forward on their dreams.

And thank you to Staples for helping to make these dreams a reality!

That is so awesome! As women, it’s so important to take control of our futures and follow our dreams. Too many of us still don’t grab life by the horns.

I really think that entrepreneurs are the back bone of our society, so I love seeing projects like this! People who are just starting out are the ones who need the most help, so this kind of project is just plain awesome!

What a great program! I’m old enough to remember the days when women weren’t encouraged to do anything. Women are just as capable and should be given the same opportunities!
