TULSA, Okla. (AP) - An Oklahoma middle school principal has been charged with child abuse and rape after a relative told police he had abused her years earlier.

Kiefer Public Schools fired Jayson Daniel Larremore, 43, after learning of the criminal investigation.

Creek County prosecutors on Wednesday charged Larremore with child sexual abuse, lewd molestation and rape by instrumentation. His accuser alleges he sexually abused her from the ages of 9 to 16 years.

A probable cause affidavit said the girl was 16 when she told her family of the abuse.

“(Investigators) learned that after the disclosure of the abuse, a family meeting was conducted to address the allegations,” police state in the affidavit. Her relatives determined the issue should “be handled within the family.” Larremore admitted to the abuse and assured his family he would leave teaching.

The woman, now in her 20s, recently learned Larremore was employed as a principal and reported him to police.

At least two people who had been present at the family meeting declined to speak to investigators when contacted in January. At least one person did not reply to investigators’ requests to speak.

Police investigators were given a handwritten letter addressed to the victim’s parents that “appears to be a confession letter,” according to the affidavit.

Kiefer Public Schools said Larremore was hired in July 2018 after he worked for eight years in another school district. He was a professor at Oral Roberts University for 10 years prior to that, according to online records.

Mary Murrell, Kiefer Public Schools Superintendent, said in a statement that Larremore’s background check “did not disclose any prior criminal charges” and followed promising references from his previous places of employment. She points out the alleged abuse didn’t happen during his tenure at Kiefer, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) southwest of Tulsa.

Larremore was apprehended on outstanding complaints and has since posted a $40,000 bond.
