House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that President Trump’s new immigration plan is “condescending” to families by suggesting their family ties have less merit than migrants with needed skills.
Speaking before the president outlined his plans in a speech from the White House, Mrs. Pelosi said House Democrats are going another direction and will approve legislation to legalize illegal immigrants.
But she did take issue with the way Mr. Trump is characterizing his new plans, which involve using a point-based system to pick more migrants by merit, shifting away from the family-based system that’s dominated since 1965.
“It is really a condescending word. Are they saying family is without merit?” the California Democrat said.
