The Democratic Twitter campaign #RepublicansForImpeachment has gone viral.
The hashtag has been tweeted an average of once every 3.8 seconds for a total of 14 million impressions in 24 hours.
“It’s hit a chord,” said Jon Cooper, chairman of Democratic Coalition Against Trump, which launched the Twitter campaign in search of grassroots GOP support for impeaching President Trump.
“For us to have a chance of conviction in the Senate, there needs to be a groundswell of public support for that,” Mr. Cooper said. “It has to be not just Democrats calling for that, there needs to be grassroots support among Republicans.”
At one point Wednesday, the hashtag was the most-tweeted hashtag in the United States.
Despite the Twitter traffic, doubt persist about the popularity of impeachment among GOP voters. A new Reuters/Ipsos poll showed Mr. Trump with 79% support among Republicans, though that number was down 4 points since last week’s release of the Mueller report.
The report cleared Mr. Trump of alleged collusion with Moscow to interfere in the 2016 election but gave Democrats ammunition to pursue impeachment over his possibly obstructing justice by trying to undermine the Russia probe.
Some Republicans and former Republicans who broke with Mr. Trump or the party seized upon the hashtag.
“My party left me when it chose Trumpism over conservatism #RepublicansForImpeachment,” tweeted Nate Bell, a former Arkansas state senator who switched from Republican to independent after Mr. Trump was elected president.
